Masala Chai: More Than a Drink, It’s a Ritual

Members at our Hot Chai Lounge - 2021

Long before Hot Yoga Nottingham came to life, there was another dream brewing — and it came in the form of a spiced, steamy cup of masala chai. 🫖

In 2021, just before the world paused for a while, we opened a cosy little Chai Lounge inside the studio. It was a soulful space where stories were shared, laughter was loud, and our favourite masala chai was the star of the show. The lounge might have closed, but the ritual continues — every Thursday evening after class, we bring the chai back. And let me tell you, it’s a vibe.

For me, masala chai isn’t just a drink. It's memories of my childhood, family mornings in India, the comforting clatter of cups, and the deep, familiar aroma rising from the pot. It’s culture, connection, and heart — all in one sip.

We serve it with love. I dreamed of introducing this tradition to our yoga community, to blend movement with mindfulness, breath with belonging. Sharing chai after a class has become a weekly ritual — no frills, just warmth. And now I want you to experience it too, wherever you are.

💫 Make it at Home — Our Masala Chai Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)

  • 2 tsp loose black tea (Assam or Darjeeling works beautifully)

  • 4 crushed green cardamom pods

  • 4 whole cloves

  • 1 small cinnamon stick

  • 1 tsp grated ginger

  • A few black peppercorns

  • Optional: star anise, nutmeg, or fennel seeds

  • Sweetener of choice: jaggery, honey, or brown sugar

Method:

  1. Add water, spices, and ginger to a pan. Bring to a simmer for 5–7 minutes.

  2. Add tea leaves and simmer for another 2 minutes.

  3. Pour in milk and bring to a gentle boil.

  4. Strain into your favourite cup. Add sweetener to taste.

  5. Sip slowly, breathe deeply, and let the warmth wrap around you.

Masala chai is a little like yoga — it invites you to pause, to feel, and to savour. We hope you enjoy the ritual as much as we do.

You can now make your life a little easier by buying a masala pre mix << this one is the best i’ve tasted yet!

Let’s keep this beautiful tradition alive together.

With love & spice,
